When the three friends wake up, they find that they are trapped in the fundamentalist Five Points Trinity Church of the infamous Pastor Abin Cooper and that they will be killed. Meanwhile the church is under siege by ATF agents led by Agent Joseph Keenan that have been ordered to destroy the terrorist cell. Will the teenagers be saved by the agents of the law enforcement agency?
In the Midwest of the USA, three sex-crazed teenage boys receive an invitation from a woman online who wants to hook up with them. When the three friends arrive, they soon realise their promise of sex is a trap and soon they must escape from the deranged leader of a Christian Fundamentalist cult.
TRIED TO REFRAIN FROM ANY SPOILERS I saw "Cop Out" and assumed Kevin Smith had gone from Independent film hero to mainstream money-man, but I am happy to say "Red State" renewed my faith in Kevin Smith and what seems to be a change of pace from the angsty, 20 something comedies he is best known for. "Red State" opensa typical Teenage comedy or Teenage Horror film might open, three friends dying to get laid, but In the background are glimpses of a much harsher storyline. We see Anti-Gay protesters outside the funeral of a recently murdered homosexual. We see a disturbed high school class discuss it with their teacher and she isdisgusted by the behavior of the intolerant protestersher students. I'm glad to see that a movie called "Red State" didn't paint the entire populace of these mainly Republican voting communitiesa gaggle of in-bred hicks or a mass grouping of racists and homophobes. What we get is the truth. A bunch of normal, average people who happen to live in the same statea Gay-bashing, Christian, Right wing nut-job of a preacher and his church. So,the film began I assumed I would be let down by what was to come, when I am suddenly following three high school kids to the middle of nowhere to get a little action from an older woman, they met on the internet. I watchedtypical, although witty, dialog led to a car accident, which led to a sheriff and a secret that he needs to keep quiet. Then, we end up in a trailer park, a few roofies in some beer, wake up in a cage and then we find out what makes "Red State" so different. Instead of what I expected to be a torture porn flick becomes something new at every turn. There is no chainsaw maniac, there is just a preacher and he just preaches to his flock. His words captivate those in his church and just before we in the audience forget that someone is in a cage, Smith is sure to remind us. The film changes and replaces a very familiar story with new angles, new people, new genres. It defies convention and I'd rather see a so called "Horror" movie try it's best to be original than to be the same thing we see re-hashed again and again. Smith deserves credit for taking real world events, ideaology, zealotry and showing us that real life has some truly scary monsters. John Goodman is great,always, playing an FBI agent who is tasked with handling what might possibly be another Waco Texas situation. Stephen Root plays the Secretive Sheriff and although a small part he plays itperfectlyhe has played every character in his career. These are the turns and people that make the plot of a forgettable slasher film into a memorable Movie. "Red State" has few failings in my eyes. It constantly allows the audience to see what is coming next and then forces them to accept the opposite. It creates a world where nothing is black and white, but some areas are much more grey than others. If I did find anything wrong with this film it's that so many people will know that Kevin Smith directed and that is practically inviting harsher criticism.
Writer and director should NEVER make another film ever! Seriously this has got to be the WORST film I have ever seen. Even the words these actors was saying did not make sense.<br/><br/>I don't believe I even stuck it out to the end, I guess I was hoping and wishing it would turn out to get better but I was disappointed. Oh how disappointed I was.<br/><br/>To the director and writer; Don't EVER make another movie again please. Also all the reviews that are saying this was good, REALLY? Somehow IMDb has got invaded by substandard movie fans. Don't waste your time on this movie, Or better yet go watch this movie so you can appreciate a real good movie even more!
This is one of those movies that's "interesting" rather than ˜"good". Smith has so much solid material to deliver that it's a shame the package is so sloppily wrapped.
Although it was initially suspected that it would be a slasher film, it is actually more like an action thriller. The horror is derived from real life hatred and the violence that people are capable of committing. Also unlike most slasher films, all violence and death in Red State is done with firearms. The movie however does feature numerous horror genre tropes where comparisons can be made between it and The Devil's Rejects and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. It is not based on an actual story but is inspired but various real life events. The villain is a composite of Fred Phelps, Jim Jones and other leaders of religious cults. The events of the story are also quite similar to the Branch Davidian tragedy in Waco, Texas. During the shootout with the ATF and Five Points Church, the congregation's children are hidden in the attic. Later the teenage church member Cheyenne tells them to escape out the back and they are not seen in the film again. During many of Kevin Smith's Q&A appearances for the film he has said that if you listen to the background audio there is the sound of children screaming in the distance soon after the scene when Cheyenne and Jared are killed. Smith said he intentionally chose not to reveal the exact fate of the children. Kevin Smith's first drafted ending for Red State was to have the climactic shootout at the church end when the true apocalypse begins: Trumpet blasts herald from the sky which turns blood red and is filled with angels, one of which impales Pastor Cooper with a flaming sword. Given the film's $5,000 special effects budget this ending was logistically impossible yet elements of it inspired the film's final ending. No. This movie is a stand alone story. It does not contain (ex: Jay and Silent Bob) any characters or overt references to previous Kevin Smith films.
